JANARA
For centuries, a walnut tree outside Benevento played host to orgiastic rites performed by witches known as Janara. These wild women, who could become invisible and fly through the air, are credited with inventing the Italian black walnut liqueur which inspired our own.
Though Saint Barbatus cut down the sacred tree long ago, it reappears every year on the Witch’s Sabbath for the Janara to gather around. This nutty, maple- sweetened spirit should be a fine accompaniment to any (more local) arboreal ritual.
